Interview former Champion Peter Herlings
The end of 2013 we were in the opportunity to interview the former Champion Peter Herlings. This all in preparation for the reunion Motocross of Aces in St. Anthonis on the 20th and 21th of September 2014. Peter Herlings belongs in the same row as his local heroes Jan Clynck, Broer Dirkx, Frans Sigmans, Pierre Karsmakers and Kees van der Ven. Each of these riders has won the Motocross of Aces one or more times. They demonstrated more tham 100% stake during this Classic meeting in spring. They were great sand riders and were able to measure themselves with the absolute world top in Motocross on the heavy sandtrack the Hoef. Herlings has put down several wonderful results in St. Anthonis with podiums. In spring of 1976 he scored a second place overall behind the American Brad Lackey, but before the Englishman Graham Noyce. During the Motocross of Nations in St. Anthonis in 1976, Herlings scored the best individual results from the Dutch Team, a fourth and third place in both heats behind the great stars like Gennady Moiseev, Roger DeCoster and Heikki Mikkola. Thanks to the great results of Herlings, the Dutch Team scored a second place overall behind our southern neighbours. In 1977 Herlings convinced to win two of the three heats during the Motocross of Aces and did not finish in one heat with suspension problems. In 1978, everthing seemed to be succesful and Herlings beated in an exciting duel the current World Champion, the flying Fin Heikki Mikkola. Peter Herlings considers the victory of the Motocross of Aces in 1978 as the most beautiful victory of his impressive Motocross career. Peter Herlings promised us further to be present during the Reunion Motocross of Aces on the 20th and 21th of September 2014 in St. Anthonis.
